Milestone Infrastructure x INSTABOOM Go

November 2024

Milestone Infrastructure has implemented the INSTABOOM Go system to improve safety and efficiency in traffic management. Traditional methods involved operatives manually handling Stop/Go boards near live traffic, leading to multiple near-miss incidents and a High Potential (HiPo) event where a sign was struck by a vehicle. Additionally, operatives faced aggressive behavior from the public.

To address these challenges, Milestone Infrastructure trialed the INSTABOOM Go, a portable, solar-powered, remote-controlled Stop/Go system. The system allows a single operator to manage up to four Stop/Go signs from a safe location, reducing the risk of accidents and miscommunication. The built-in software ensures that only one Go signal is active at any time, preventing potential head-on collisions.

During a three-week trial with patching teams from the Drayton depot, the system was tested in both two-way and three-way Stop/Go configurations. The setup process was efficient, with the system being operational in under a minute. The signal range was effective up to 800 meters in open areas and 250 meters in urban settings, aligning with the guidelines of Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual.

The trial demonstrated significant safety improvements and operational benefits. Based on positive feedback, Milestone Infrastructure decided to retain the units and plans to deploy them across other depots. This initiative aligns with recommendations from the Traffic Signs Manual and the Safety at Street Works and Road Works Code of Practice, which advocate for the use of remotely controlled Stop/Go signs to enhance safety.
